Pool inspections are not a moneymaker for health departments.
Annual inspection fees range from $50 for a small wading pool to $270 for a large swimming pool or waterslide. These fees bring in about $23,000 a year for Linn County, which doesn't even cover one employee's salary.
Inspectors can request the state health department withhold or revoke a pool's license based on violations. If the pool appeals the request, an administrative law judge holds a hearing and decides the case.
The state has revoked only one pool's license in the past five years - at the Econolodge in Boone, just northwest of Des Moines.
