By Laurie Lindsay: I was a student at Kirkwood on Sept. 11, 2001. I will never forget hearing that a plane had hit the World Trade Center while on break from class. Of course, like most others, I simply thought it was pilot error. It wasn't until the second plane struck that I became overwhelmed with emotion.
When we resumed class, we watched in horror as the towers began to crumble and fall. All of us were speechless, and many of us were left in tears.
After class I wondered if there would be more attacks and if my 6-year-old son was safe at school. I decided not to take him out early, and later that evening we had a long discussion about the information he received at school and answered his questions. Thank goodness he was only 6 and a bit too young to comprehend the magnitude of such a travesty.
For the next several days, I was glued to the television every chance I got and continued to mourn for the families of those lost and for our nation.
God bless all who gave their lives that fateful day, and God bless the USA!
