Horizons plans return of hot meals
Orders also being taken for Cookies of Compassion
Apr. 21, 2021 2:05 pm
Horizons, A Family Service Alliance has announced it will resume providing hot meals on June 1, when Meals on Wheels clients will begin receiving a daily hot meal instead of one delivery each week with seven frozen meals included. Volunteers are needed with this change.
Also, Horizons’ Cookies of Compassion Fundraiser ordering is now live. Order one dozen cookies at www.horizonsfamily.org/cookiesofcompassion and help provide four meals to a hungry senior. Pickup and delivery for the fundraiser benefiting our Meals on Wheels program will happen May 7 across Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha
Other updates at Horizons
• Volunteer Erica Ly will be doing chalk murals in front of homebound seniors homes on Friday to help combat social isolation. Then she’ll do a mural on Monday for Volunteer Appreciation Month in front of our street freezer for delivery volunteers to enjoy as they stop by 819 Fifth St. SE. Erica has been volunteering with Horizons since March 2020 and spends at least three days a week in the building helping to feed Meals on Wheels recipients.
• Community Gardens across the street are ramping up. Feed Iowa First has helped plant peas and provide carrot seeds for initial plantings. Volunteers are working their way through the beds to get them ready to grow produce that will be distributed to our Meals on Wheels clients when they’re mature. This Senior CSA program will distribute fresh produce to food-insecure older adults.
