Freshman grappler arrested

Mar. 15, 2010 3:04 pm
According to online records of the City of Iowa City Police Department, University of Iowa freshman wrestler Derek St. John was arrested at 1:19 a.m. Saturday morning at 113 East College St. in Iowa City, which is the listed address for 3rd Base/The Fieldhouse bar. He was charged with disorderly conduct.
The Gazette learned through a police report that St. John was supposedly involved in an altercation, punching a bar employee three times and resisted when they attempted to remove him. The establishment did not make a call to police. They likely were in the area and responded to the incident, which appears to be minor.
St. John, 19, a two-time state champion and four-time state medalist for Iowa City West high school, red-shirted this season. He posted a 26-4 record, winning titles at the Wisconsin Open and Grand View Open. He placed third in two other tournaments and earned a fifth-place finish at the 2009 Midlands Championships in December.
