Four-time offspring battle

Mar. 19, 2010 10:42 pm
A couple of familiar names in Iowa high school history battled for a medal last night.
University of Iowa's Ryan Morningstar and Cornell's Justin Kerber wrestled in a consolation match at 165 pounds. The winner reaches the podium, while the other finished a win shy of being an All-American.
Morningstar, a three-time state champion for Lisbon, is the son of Scott Morningstar, who was Iowa's third four-time state prep champion winning titles for the Lions from 1977-80. That was one year after Kerber's father, Jeff, became the second in state history to win four titles for Emmetsburg (1976-79). Justin Kerber was a four-time finalist and two time state champion for Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted.
Morningstar scored a takedown in the final seconds of the first 30-second overtime tiebreaker period for a 3-2 win.
