IOWA CITY - A former University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics employee has been charged with sexual exploitation based on allegations he had sex with a former patient in April 2013.
Joel M. Carrillo, 37, of West Branch, was charged last month with sexual exploitation by a counselor or therapist, an aggravated misdemeanor. He pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the Johnson County charge.
Carrillo is accused of having sex with an emotionally-dependent woman to whom he had previously provided mental health services and while she was a patient of another program, according to the trial information.
Carrillo worked as a psychiatric nursing assistant at UI Hospitals from Nov. 17, 2008, to April 30, 2013, when he was terminated as a result of disciplinary action, said Stephen Pradarelli, director of University News Services. Carrillo was paid $30,900 in fiscal 2013.
