The athletes who finished second through fifth in the voting:
TANNER MILLER
- School: Mid-Prairie High School
- High school highlights: Two-time all-state running back finished career with 4,005 rushing yards, 57 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He scored more than 1,000 points in basketball, averaging 19 points and 7 rebounds as a senior while earning first team all-state. Won 400-meter hurdles championship in 2A as a junior and senior. His team won state track title in 2008.
- Future: Will play football at the University of Iowa.
MAX MARTINO
- School: Cedar Rapids Kennedy
- High school highlights: Versatile three-sport athlete. A two-year starter at four positions in football (receiver, quarterback, running back and safety) and was second team all-state. Two-year starter in basketball and the Cougars' defensive player of the year two straight seasons. Won a Drake Relays title in the shuttle hurdle relay and is a state-record holder in that event. Played baseball for two years.
- Future: Will play basketball at the University of Northern Iowa.
A.J. DERBY
- School: Iowa City High
- High school highlights: Selected captain of the Class 4A all-state team after quarterbacking City High to the 4A state championship. Little Hawks finished 14-0. Passed for two touchdowns and ran for another in a 42-14 win over Marshalltown in the final. A key player on City High's 2008 state championship basketball team, he left City after the first semester this year and enrolled at the University of Iowa.
- Future: Will play football at Iowa.
NICK MOORE
- School: Iowa City West
- High school highlights: One of 19 Iowa high school wrestlers to win four state championships. He ended with a 183-1 record, including 151 straight victories to cap it. Collected 113 pins, including 22 straight through one stretch. A member of two state-championship teams at West.
- Future: Will wrestle at the University of Iowa.
