Family dog finds missing 2-year-old boy in Dubuque County corn field
Aug. 26, 2010 2:30 pm
One family dog emerged from a Dubuque County corn field as a hero this morning.
A 2-year-old boy was lost for nearly an hour in the tall corn at a farm on Prier Road between Dyersville and Farley.
Like any typical morning, Janel Kluesner was playing in the front yard with her son Jack.
Kluesner said, “I ran into the house to use the restroom and grab my breakfast and the whole time peaking out the window to make sure I would see him. And when I peeked out the last time, I couldn't see him. ”
Janel searched the yard. That's when she noticed Jack's motorized tractor parked next to the corn. She knew right away, her curious little boy was lost in the field.
Kluesner said, “I was panicking because there is a culvert where there is water, so I was worried he was going to get to that water first and possibly drown.”
She called 911 and her husband. Within minutes dozens of people were scouring the fields. That's when Janel realized the family dog was missing too.
Kluesner said, “And (searchers) heard the dog, Margo barking. My husband said ‘wherever that dog is that's where he is.'”
Sure enough her husband found Jack and the dog about a quarter of a mile from the house.
Kluesner said, “I think the dog saved the day. I think she had a Lassie moment.”
Jack told his dad he went into the field to go see the neighbor's cows. But who needs cows, when you've got a dog like Margo?
