Drew Tate: Mr. Touchdown for the CFL champs

Dec. 1, 2014 10:16 am
Drew Tate, Mr. Touchdown.
Almost 10 years since his 'Hail Mary” pass to Warren Holloway won the Capital One Bowl for Iowa, Tate had a big role in the Calgary Stampeders' Grey Cup victory Sunday night.
Tate isn't the Stampeders' starting quarterback, but he is their QB in short-yardage situations near the opponent's goal line. He scored twice on 1-yard keepers to give Calgary a 14-0 lead on the way to its 20-16 triumph over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Vancouver.
Calgary starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was the Grey Cup MVP. Tate started four regular-season games this season, three because Mitchell was injured.
Tate threw 61 touchdown passes for Iowa from 2003-06. He has been in the CFL for eight seasons, the last six with Calgary. This year he passed for five touchdowns and 823 yards, and had a league-high 10 rushing TDs. He had 42 carries for 129 yards.
Tate had three carries in the Grey Cup. His third one picked up a yard on 3rd-and-1.
