On Ball State
. . . One of the times Ball State came through early in my run as the Gazette's Iowa football beat writer, an e-mailer asked where exactly Ball State is. I gave it some thought, and, yeah, that's a good point. I never did write anywhere that it's in Muncie, Ind. So, you guys, it's in Muncie, Ind. I'll try to remember each time I write about the Cardinals (not Cardinal) this week.
Seriously on Ball State, coach Pete Lembo will be somewhere else eventually. He's big picture, detail-oriented and he's won everywhere, almost literally. In just over a decade, Lembo has won, and won pretty big, in the Patriot League (a northeastern-based conference), the Southern Conference (an FCS powerhouse), and the MAC (a midwestern mid-major).
He won at underdog schools (Elon?!?). He has CEO'd rebuilds - Ball State went 6-18 before Lembo; Elon was in a 14-42 funk.
The Big Ten? Purdue was interested, but hired Darrell Hazell. Illinios? Well, it still has a coach.
The challenge for Lembo this year is flipping the Cardinals' MO. Last year, it was a throwing O with QB Keith Wenning. In the opener, Lembo leaned on his most experienced personnel (RB and OL) and rushed for 311 yards.
More football nerdiness
. . . Iowa formations from the UNI game broke down this way:
11 (one RB, one TE) - 32 (42 percent)
12 (one RB, two TE) - 29 (38 percent)
21 (RB, FB and one TE) - 12 (16 percent)
23 (RB, FB, three TEs) - 3 (4 percent, goal-line, short-yardage, No. 40, BTW, was OT Ryan Ward)
22 (RB, FB, two TEs) - 2 (3 percent)
01 (no RB, one TE) - 1 (1 percent, this was the tunnel-screen TD to WR Damond Powell, Iowa had an empty backfield and in-line TE)
Where Iowa's O did stuff

Trinca-Pasat honored
. . . From Iowa sports info: Iowa senior defensive lineman Louis Trinca-Pasat received honorable mention recognition for defensive linemen Performer of the Week from the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) for his play in Iowa's 31-23 win over Northern Iowa.
Trinca-Pasat, a 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive tackle from Chicago (Lane Tech HS), has started 26 straight games for the Hawkeyes. He recorded 10 tackles in the opening win, including two solo stops and eight assists. He was credited with three tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a pass break-up. He was one of three FBS defensive linemen to record 10-plus tackles and 3-plus tackles for loss during the opening weekend of the college football season.
The Iowa defense held Northern Iowa to 25 net rushing yards on 25 attempts, recording five sacks among the nine tackles for loss. The Hawkeyes did not allow a rush of over nine yards and allowed no rushing touchdowns.
