For longtime Council Bluffs resident Frances Lash, Grant Wood was far more than an internationally acclaimed Iowa artist – he was a family friend. Lash said her father, Verne Marshall, the Pulitizer-prize winning editor of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, was an early backer of Wood, and the Gazette provided “a good deal of free publicity” for the aspiring artist. ...
