Cook, Boyle highlight all-state teams

CEDAR RAPIDS - The Iowa Newspaper Association's all-state football teams have been Cooked and Boyled.
Multiple state champion quarterbacks Drew Cook of Iowa City Regina and Ryan Boyle of West Des Moines Dowling highlight the list of 2014 honorees, selected team captains of their respective classes, it has been announced. Both are University of Iowa recruits.
Cook is captain of the Class 1A team after the Regals won their state-record fifth consecutive state title. He threw for 2,504 yards and 31 touchdowns this season, rushing for 706 yards and 16 TDs and even catching a touchdown pass in the championship game last Friday against West Lyon.
Boyle led Dowling to its second straight Class 4A championship, 49-14, over Cedar Rapids Washington. He accounted for over 3,000 rushing and passing yards and 37 combined touchdowns.
Other team captains include running back-linebackers Josh Mackey of North Fayette Valley (2A) and Ryan Parmely of Maquoketa Valley (A). Newspaper sportswriters from around the state, including The Gazette's Jeff Johnson, helped select the all-state teams.
Washington finished with a school-record 13 victories and reaped the benefits of that successs with seven players honored as 4A all-staters, including first-teamers Julian Good-Jones (offensive line), Connor Vincent (linebacker) and Reid Snitker (defensive utility player). Good-Jones will sign with Iowa State.
Iowa City West defensive back John Milani also is a first-team 4A pick. Dowling dominated the three 4A teams, with 10 players picked, including six first-teamers.
The Class 3A first team includes area offensive linemen Tommy Peterson of Washington (Iowa) Tim Otting of Cedar Rapids Xavier, Colin Brown of West Delaware and Logan Linderbaum of Solon. Decorah's Jave Hovden (defensive back) and Washington's Daryn Sebelius (linebacker) also are on the first team.
Mackey is the only first-team all-stater from North Fayette Valley, which defeated Sioux Center last Friday for the 2A championship. He is joined by Cascade's dynamic passing combo of quarterback Derek Lieurance and receiver Nate Bergfeld.
Ian Slagle of South Tama and Colton Lueck of Dyersville Beckman were selected first-team all-state offensive linemen. Wyatt Sadler of Center Point-Urbana (defensive line), Tyler Hirsch of Beckman (linebacker) and Peyton Paddock of Monticello (punter) also are on the 2A first team.
Cook definitely was not a one-man show for Regina, which rebounded from a season-opening loss to 3A Solon. Other Regals picked for the 1A first team are receiver Nathan Stenger, lineman Phil Arendt, linebacker Jacob Brinkman and kicker Jacob Adam.
North Cedar wife receiver Ian Malaby, who set a state record with 101 catches, also is a 1A first-team pick, joined on the team by South Winneshiek receiver Jordan Rommes, North Cedar offensive lineman Noah Sander, West Branch offensive lineman John St. John, North Cedar defensive lineman Adam Poduska, South Winn defensive lineman Luis Uribe, West Branch defensive lineman Jacob Giese and Clayton Ridge's Ryan Moser (utility) and Colton Rastetter (punter).
Parmely, who finished his career ranked top 10 in the state in career rushing, was joined on the A first team by lineman teammate Matt Lansing. The Eight-Player first team includes Elkader Central's Nathan Fitzgerald (back), West Central wide receiver Joe Wolfe, HLV defensive lineman Louis Kriegel, Elkader Central linbacker Isaiah Hopp and Turkey Valley's Levi Klimesh (defensive utility player).
