Cold CRANDIC golf meet

Apr. 21, 2011 2:40 pm
Golf is a spring sport but there was nothing “springlike” about the weather Wednesday for the CRANDIC girls golf meet at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion.
The tournament started with temperatures in the mid-30s, according to records for the Metro area on the National Weather Service of the Quad Cities website, Highs reached to the low to mid 40s. Winds reached a high of 21 miles per hour. Compare that to the recorded 73-degree high when it was played at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City last year.

Golfers were sporting jackets, heavy sweat shirts and hats. They fought to keep their hands warm, attempting to avoid issues with their grip. Linn-Mar Coach Steve Kahler made reference to the elements during the awards ceremony, following the round.
“A lot of good golf under adverse conditions,” Kahler said. “It was the coldest I've ever remembered it.”
Cedar Rapids Jefferson swept the team and individual titles. The J-Hawks posted a score of 393, six shots better than runner-up Cedar Rapids Xavier. Jefferson junior Megan Furnish was the medalist with a 79, edging Iowa City West's Madison Goodfellow by one.
