Dec. 2, 2009 11:33 am
Coe College football coach Steve Staker has been named the NCAA Division III Region Five Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association.
Coe finished 10-2, advancing to the second round of the D-III playoffs, upsetting St. John's (Minn.) in the first round.
The Kohawks lost last weekend to St. Thomas (Minn.).
The AFCA honors five regional coaches in each of the five divisions of college football (NCAA BCS, NCAA FCS, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA). Iowa's Kirk Ferentz also was an AFCA COY winner.
Staker, Ferentz and the other winners will be honored at the 2010 AFCA Convention in Orlando, Fla.
