City girls, Washington boys prevail in 4A meet

IOWA CITY -- They run together virtually year-round.

In cross country practice. On training runs in the harsh winter and the steamy summer.

Thursday evening, Rebecca Rethwisch and Meg Richardson toured the Raffensperger Track together one final time.

OK, two final times.

The Iowa City distance duo split a pair of distance photo-finishes in a Class 4A state-qualifying track meet. Richardson won the 3,000, Rethwisch captured the 1,500.

Not that the order mattered.

"This is what we wanted, to come down the stretch together," said Rethwisch, a senior who has signed with the University of Minnesota. "We wanted to finish together. It didn't matter who was listed as first place."

In both races, they finished 1-hundredth of a second apart.

"We've run together for three years," said Richardson, a junior. When we're able to run together, we are able to stay positive. It was good to do this one last little wonderful time."

City High outscored Iowa City West, 188-163, for the girls' team title. City High put 22 entrants on the provisional state-meet roster, West 17.

The top four finishers in each event are placed on the provisional qualifying list. The official list, after any "bumps" are identified, will be released Friday or Saturday.

Two-time defending boys' state champion Cedar Rapids Washington has 16 provisional qualifiers and racked up 133 points. Cedar Rapids Prairie edged West, 107-105, for second. Prairie, West and City High have 11 provisional qualifiers apiece.

Keep an eye on the boys' 400-meter relay at state. West edged Washington in that event Thursday, leading to some serious woofing between the Trojans and Washington anchor Alex Carr on the front stretch afterward.

"It's a pretty heated rivalry," Carr said after accepting a word and a hug from West anchor Charles Rogers. "People don't notice this kind of thing, but this is why I love track so much. You go as hard as you can for 10, 12 seconds and give nothing but 110 percent."

Prairie won five events, including a 800/1,600 double by Matt Stocker. The Hawks won the 3,200 relay without him.

"It gives us some options," said Stocker, who anticipates running the 800, 1,600, medley and 3,200 relay at state.

Washington's Brooke Foreman was among the glossiest gems on the girls' side, edging teammate Layloni Beard in the 100 hurdles, joining her in the winning shuttle hurdle relay and easily claiming the 400 hurdles in 1:04.52.

"The first hurdle, I went over with my left leg instead of my right," Foreman said. "The rest of the race, it felt so good.

"(In the 100 hurdles), I've never gotten off to a start like I did today. I didn't see anybody by my side, and I knew I had to maintain my lead."

Both high jumps were a highlight.

Alec Clasen of Cedar Rapids Xavier cleared a career-best 6-8 on his third jump, edging Jeremy Johnson of City High (6-7).

"The heat helped keep my muscles loose," Clasen said. "I hope to keep building on this. I'd really like to clear 6-9."

City's Virginia Johnson won the girls' high jump at 5-6.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Anthony Crawley captured the boys' 400 and anchored the Cougars' winning medley and 1,600-meter relays.
