CENTER POINT - Center Point-Urbana was clearly stymied against Class 2A No. 2 North Fayette Valley.
No first downs until the final three minutes of the third quarter. No completed passes until well into the final frame.
But thanks to their stout defense and seven TigerHawk turnovers, the Stormin' Pointers finally generated enough offense to pull off a stunner.
CP-U quarterback Clayton Kramer's 19-yard touchdown pass to Alec Burke with 4:29 left on 4th-and-10 capped a surprising fourth quarter rally and the Stormin' Pointers upset North Fayette Valley, 14-12, last night in the 2A District 3 opener before a jubilant home crowd.
'Our quarterback here Kramer, he gave me a chance,” said Burke, who also intercepted a pass on defense. 'I saw it and I just went up and I got it.”
CP-U (3-0) was listless on offense in the first half and with no discernible passing threat, the North Fayette Valley defense keyed on star tailback Brandon Kinsey while its wrecking ball Josh Mackey gashed the vaunted CP-U defense to the tune of 111 yards rushing and two touchdowns for a 12-0 halftime lead.
'We told our defense at halftime,” CP-U Coach Dan Burke said. 'If you just keep us in it, we'll try to do something. They kept giving us chances.”
Burke's defense responded, holding Mackey to just 49 second-half yards and tallying six fumble recoveries and an interception to continually turn the TigerHawks away. Juniors Sam Gosnell and Trevor Rommann accounted for two fumble recoveries apiece.
After recovering a muffed punt down 12-0, CP-U drove 37 yards in nine plays, capped by a 1-yard plunge from Kinsey on 4th-and-goal with 8:27 left in the game. Kinsey finished with 59 hard-fought yards on 32 carries and his sixth touchdown this season.
Another North Fayette Valley fumble less than a minute later set up the winning touchdown drive, as Kramer lifted a pass against the right sideline to a leaping Alec Burke for the desperation fourth-down touchdown from 19 yards out.
'Alec and I just knew each other being quarterbacks together,” said Kramer, who finished 3 of 9 for 55 yards. 'We just told him to get up there and I'd give him a chance.”
CP-U was outgained 263 to 120 and had just four first downs compared to 16 by North Fayette Valley.
Senior defensive back Brody Woods recovered a fumble and picked off a pass for North Fayette Valley (2-1).
Next week, CP-U tests its undefeated record at Waterloo Columbus, while North Fayette Valley hosts Oelwein.
