Cedar Rapids man is running for governor

Aug. 14, 2010 7:01 am
If things in Iowa are going to change, Greg Hughes of Cedar Rapids believes it will be led by a common person willing to start at the top.
Hughes has stepped into that role, filing to run for governor.
Hughes and running mate Robin Prior-Calef, also of Cedar Rapids, are running without party designation, having been nominated by petition,
On his campaign website, Hughes says it's time for a common person to run to “try and control the politicians and the money junkies they have become.”
“With budget out of control, the only thing government knows to do is raise taxes,” he says.
Most Iowans are hurting, many are losing their jobs and homes “and their government wants to raise taxes,” according to Hughes, who works at Quaker Oats. “It's time to bring this to a stop.”
Hughes, a divorced father who serves on IowaFathers' Child Support Advisory Committee, intends to highlight “all the injustices occurring in courts regarding domestic relations cases and how this impacts parenting, worker productivity, and employment opportunities here in Iowa.”
In addition to Hughes, Democratic incumbent Gov. Chet Culver, former Republican Gov. Terry Branstad, Libertarian Eric Cooper, Socialist Dave Rosenfeld and the Iowa Party's Jonathan Narcisse have filed for governor.
The deadline was Aug. 13.
