These are local and area qualifiers. All games are being played at the Cownie Park complex in Des Moines. Quarterfinal matches are Thursday, semifinals Friday and finals Saturday.
CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY
Class: 3A
Seed: 8th
Record: 14-5
Quarterfinal Match: vs. West Des Moines Valley (20-1), 5 p.m.
Outlook: Cougars will go as far as the Christianson brothers take them. Striker Garet has 3A-best 27 goals in 19 games, midfielder Gabe has 15 goals and 3A-best 26 assists in 18 games. Garet is a senior, Gabe a junior, and they are playing prep soccer for first time after distinguished careers at the club level. Gabe was recently named Gatorade player of the year in Iowa.
CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON
Class: 3A
Seed: 4th
Record: 16-3
Quarterfinal Match: vs. Iowa City West (15-4), 5 p.m.
Outlook: Warriors' best player is senior midfielder Brandon Besong, who will play collegiately at Missouri State. Sophomore Jack Sundermann leads team with nine goals. At full strength after missing five starting defenders first part of season for various reasons. Beat West in regular season, 2-1.
CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER
Class: 2A
Seed: 1st
Record: 14-2-1
Quarterfinal Match: vs. Clear Creek-Amana (12-4), 2:30 p.m.
Outlook: Saints look for back-to-back 2A titles. Have responded well in postseason to injury loss of leading scorer Zach Smith (knee). Chad Gilmer leads deep team with 14 goals in 17 games. Xavier is 3-0 against 2A clubs this season. Rest of schedule was against 3A teams.
CLEAR CREEK-AMANA
Class: 2A
Seed: 8th
Record: 12-4
Quarterfinal Match: vs. Cedar Rapids Xavier (14-2-1), 2:30 p.m.
Outlook: Comparing scores doesn't do Clippers any favors. They lost in regular season to Class 1A entrant Solon, 8-2, and to Marion, 3-2. First-round opponent Xavier beat Marion in substate finals, 4-0. Ryan Hall leads club with 19 goals in 14 games. Freshman Josh Sparks has scored 17 points in 15 games.
IOWA CITY REGINA
Class: 1A
Seed: 3rd
Record: 16-2-1
Quarterfinal Match: vs. Nevada (14-4-1), Noon.
Outlook: Losses were to 3A schools Marshalltown and Bettendorf. Tie was to 2A Waterloo Columbus. Like city mate West, Regals are seeking third consecutive state crown. As always, club revolves offensively around dynamic duo of Johnny Rummelhart (18 goals in 15 games) and Daniel Larew (14 goals, 25 points in 18 games).
IOWA CITY WEST
Class: 3A
Seed: 5th
Record: 15-4
Quarterfinal Match: vs. Cedar Rapids Washington (16-3), 5 p.m.
Outlook: Looking for a 3A three-peat, this is a dangerous team. Only two returning starters from last season's 22-0 team, but one of those is striker Tanner Schilling. He missed first seven games with broken ankle but returned with a vengeance, picking up nine goals and nine assists in 12 games. West lost just once when Schilling played. Sophomore Paris Martins has 10 goals in 18 games.
SOLON
Class: 2A
Seed: 4th
Record: 15-2-1
Quarterfinal Match: vs. Council Bluffs St. Albert (13-7), Noon.
Outlook: First trip to state for Spartans. You'll recognize many of the names on this team from other sports. Leading scorer Marshall Koehn (32 goals in 18 games) is headed to Iowa as a walk-on kicker/punter. Fellow senior Max Alberhasky has added 20 goals in 18 games. If success in other sports counts, this club could make some noise.
