Big 2nd half lifts Boyden-Hull past Iowa Mennonite, 64-44

DES MOINES - Boyden-Hull took away every Chance the Iowa Mennonite School had in Monday afternoon's state tournament game. The fourth-ranked Comets locked up guard Chance Miller following his torrid first quarter and gradually pulled away for a 64-44 win in a Class 1A quarterfinal at Wells Fargo Arena.
“He came out really hot,” said Boyden-Hull guard Taylor Francis. “Our game plan the rest of the way was to stop him and make the others beat us. I thought we did a good job with that.”
Miller is IMS' leading scorer but surpassed his season average of 13 with five triples and a 15-point first quarter. But thanks primarily to the stickiness of Colin Boikema, Miller got just two shots off the rest of the game, missing both.
Meanwhile, Boyden-Hull (24-2), whose only two losses are to 3A top-ranked MOC/Floyd Valley, turned a four-point first-quarter deficit into a 30-28 halftime lead. The Comets outscored Miller-less IMS (22-5) in the second half by 18 points.
“They adapted,” Miller said. “They put a kid on me, and he was in my jersey the whole time. He worked hard. I had to work my butt off to get the ball, so when I got it, I didn't really do much with it. That's just how it works, I guess. They're a great team, know how to play team defense.”
Iowa Mennonite turned it over 21 times, with Boyden-Hull recording 13 steals. That also was a huge factor.
Cameron Gingerich added 13 points for IMS, which lost a state quarterfinal for a second consecutive year.
“They got out in the passing lanes probably better than any teams we played all year,” said IMS Coach Dwight Gingerich. “It seemed like they were able to find that flow and they stayed in it. We were spotty.”
IMS knew it would have its hands full with 6-foot-5 B-H center Bryce Moss, and did, as he scored a game-high 18 points, 12 in the second half. Francis added 16 and forward Brandt Van Roekel 15 for a team that shot 61.1 percent in the second half.
“We lost in the first round last year,” Cameron Gingerich said. “All year, it's been our goal to get past that. But we came in here and were probably the underdog.”
