Beckman whips South Winn for district title

Oct. 21, 2011 10:52 pm
DYERSVILLE – Dyersville Beckman met and midfield, formed a big circle and did the “Hoeky Pokey” dance. The Blazers call it their end of the season ritual.
After last night, they might want to refer to it as the championship dance.
Eighth-ranked Beckman trounced No. 7 South Winneshiek to capture the Class 2A District 4 title with a 37-0 victory at Beckman Field.
Beckman, South Winn and North Fayette all had 6-1 district records but the points system left Beckman needing to win by at least a field goal for the district's top seed.
“We didn't want to settle for anything less than first,” Beckman quarterback Connor Golden said. “We knew we had to beat them by three points, so that's why every extra point was crucial. Everything we did tonight was crucial.”
The Blazers (8-1, 6-1) were focused on what they needed to do from the beginning of the week. They knew a strong performance was needed against South Winn (8-1, 6-1).
“We practiced really hard this week,” Beckman wideout Ty Troutman said. “We had probably one of our best weeks of practice. We just came out firing tonight.”
Golden ended up firing to Troutman and wide receiver Robbie Anstoetter to light up the South Winn defense.
With the Blazers owning a 2-0 lead after the opening quarter, Golden hit Anstoetter on a pair of touchdowns to give Beckman a 16-0 lead at halftime. Anstoetter made an over-the-head catch while stumbling back, regained his feet and turned up the sideline, reaching for the pylon with a defender draped over him for a 15-yard TD with 3:55 left in the second quarter.
After Beckman held the Warriors on a 3-and-out series, the pair connected on a similar play from 33 yards out just 1:20 before the break. The play worked again for a 42-yard TD to make the score 30-0 in the final minutes of the third quarter.
Golden finished with 239 yards passing and five touchdowns. Anstoetter and Troutman took each of their receptions for touchdowns. Troutman, who made two outstanding catches and runs for scores in the second half, finished with 127 yards on two catches. Anstoetter had 90 on his three scores.
“My wide receivers did most of the work,” Golden said. “Robbie and Ty had a lot of yards after the catch.”
Beckman's defense held a potent South Winn offense to under 200 yards of total offense, including 127 on the ground. Freshman Ryan Hageman led the Warriors with 72 rushing yards. Colton Hageman, who was fourth in 2A rushing coming into week 9 did not play.
The Blazers tied a school record with their fourth shutout of the season, which hadn't been done since 1988. The defense put Beckman on the board, scoring a safety when Todd Manternach tackled South Winn quarterback Jared Holien in the end zone, benefitting from the surge of the defensive line, in the final seconds of the first quarter,
“The defense just played great,” Troutman said. “They've played good all season.”
Beckman reached the state quarterfinals last season before losing at home to North Fayette. The win assures a game at home against a 2A District fourth-place team. The big win could provide some momentum entering the playoffs.
“Most definitely,” Anstoetter said. “It helps us to know what we can do against a good team.”
