As the high school football regular season heads into the final week, here is how area district races shape up:
CLASS 3A DISTRICT 4
All four of the berths have been settled, and so has the championship. West Delaware (7-1, 6-0) has run the table so far and will be the top team from the district, regardless of its Friday outcome with Oelwein (6-2, 4-2). Decorah (6-2, 5-1) has wrapped up the second slot and home field for the first round. Waverly-Shell Rock (6-2, 4-2) and Oelwein have sewn up berths, and WSR gets the third spot with a win against Charles City.
CLASS 3A DISTRICT 5
Maquoketa (7-1, 6-0) has won seven straight games and is the district champion. Union (6-2, 4-2) and Western Dubuque (5-3, 4-2) are playoff-bound. The other berth goes to Friday's winner between DeWitt Central (4-4, 4-2) and Center Point-Urbana (3-5, 3-3). The Stormin' Pointers have won three straight after an 0-5 start. Union and Western Dubuque are heavy favorites. In the event of a three-way tie at 5-2, Union currently has the advantage in the point-spread tie-breaker.
CLASS 3A DISTRICT 6
The championship race goes to the final week. Solon (7-1, 6-0) and Grinnell (7-1, 6-0) will fight it out Friday at Grinnell. Williamsburg (6-2, 4-2) is guaranteed a berth. The fourth one will go to Benton Community (3-5, 3-3) if the Bobcats beat South Tama or if Washington (4-4, 3-3) loses to Williamsburg. If the Demons win and the Bobcats lose, Washington advances.
CLASS 2A DISTRICT 4
Three teams have secured playoff berths, but the title picture is still a bit hazy. South Winneshiek (8-0, 6-0) wins it outright if it defeats Dyersville Beckman (7-1, 5-1) at Dyersville. If Beckman wins by three points or more, the Blazers are the champions. The Blazers win the crown if they win by any margin and North Fayette (6-2, 5-1) stumbles at Monticello (4-4, 3-3). Cascade (4-4, 3-3) has the inside track to the fourth spot, and claims it with a win or a Monticello defeat.
CLASS 2A DISTRICT 5
As dominant as Iowa City Regina (8-0, 6-0) has been, the Regals still need to beat West Liberty (6-2, 5-1) to win the district title. West Liberty will be crowned if they win and if Wilton (6-2, 5-1) falls to Camanche (4-4, 3-3). Louisa-Muscatine (3-5, 3-3) gets the fourth playoff spot if it wins or if Camanche loses.
CLASS 2A DISTRICT 6
All four berths have been determined: Mediapolis (8-0, 6-0), Albia (6-2, 5-1), Mid-Prairie (5-3, 4-2) and Davis County (6-2, 4-2) are in. Barring upsets, that's the order in which they'll finish.
CLASS 1A DISTRICT 5
It's a lot more clear than it looks at first glance. Turkey Valley (6-2, 5-1) stands in a first-place tie with Wapsie Valley (7-1, 5-1) and Starmont (7-1, 5-1), but the Trojans will be district champions if they beat Clayton Ridge on Friday because they have defeated both Wapsie and Starmont. The Warriors and the Stars battle at Arlington, and both teams have secured playoff spots. The fourth berth goes to Friday's winner between Bellevue (6-2, 4-2) and Maquoketa Valley (5-3, 3-3).
CLASS 1A DISTRICT 6
The four qualifiers have been determined. Two years removed from an 0-9 season, Alburnett (8-0, 6-0) has clinched the crown. West Branch (6-2, 5-1), Pekin (4-4, 4-2) and North Cedar (6-2, 4-2) will finish second, third and fourth if the Bears beat North Cedar Friday at home.
CLASS A DISTRICT 4
Postville (8-0, 6-0) has completed district play in perfect fashion; the Pirates host Mason City Newman in a non-district encounter Friday. North Tama (7-1, 4-1), Don Bosco (6-2, 3-2) and Elkader Central (4-4, 3-2) are playoff qualifiers. North Tama is at Central Friday with a chance to wrap up home-field for Round 1.
CLASS A DISTRICT 5
Lisbon (8-0, 5-0) has been dominant all year and can clinch the district title with a win Friday at WACO (7-1, 4-1). WACO is a qualifier, as is Lone Tree (7-1, 4-1). Danville (4-4, 2-3) has the easiest road to the fourth berth; the Bears are at English Valleys while Winfield-Mount Union (2-6, 2-3) is at Lone Tree. Danville holds the head-to-head tie-breaker.
CLASS A DISTRICT 6
The four tickets have been punched. BGM (6-2, 5-0) is the champion while Friday's winner between Iowa Valley (6-2, 4-1) and Lynnville-Sully (6-2, 4-1) will be the runner-up. Belle Plaine has qualified despite a 2-6 record (2-3 in district).
8-MAN DISTRICT 4
Preston (7-1, 5-0) is the champion, Lansing Kee (6-2, 4-1) is the runner-up. Midland (7-2, 3-2) and West Central 4-4, 3-2) also have wrapped up berths and play for third place Friday at Maynard.
8-MAN DISTRICT 5
Melcher-Dallas (8-0, 6-0),
Moravia (7-1, 5-1) and
Tri-County (5-4, 4-2) are in. The last card will be dealt at Bussey, where
Meskwaki Settlement (4-5, 3-3) meets
Twin Cedars (3-5, 3-3) on Friday.
Brant Wade and South Winneshiek can win Class 2A District 4 and finish an unbeaten regular season if they win at Dyersville Beckman on Friday. (Bryon Houlgrave/Freelance)
