IOWA CITY -- It's the Battle for the Spike.
And it's No. 1 vs. No. 2.
Class 4A top-ranked Iowa City High hosts No. 2 Iowa City West in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
City High (17-1 overall, 3-0 MVC) stands alone atop the MVC Mississippi Division; West (18-5, 3-0) is tied for the Valley Division lead with Dubuque Hempstead.
The Little Hawks absorbed their first defeat Saturday, against Western Christian at the Fort Dodge Invitational. The defending 4A state champion, West was 3-3 at the Dubuque Wahlert Invite.
Four hitters from City High are averaging more than 2 kills per game and a kill efficiency of .300-plus. Rachel Rinehart leads the way at 2.96 and .368. Erin Muir averages 10.05 assists per game.
Shelly Stumpff averages 3.36 kills per game to lead West. Kelley Fliehler has emerged as West's setter.
