IOWA CITY - Public benches in downtown Iowa City have become canvases for local artists as part of the sixth installment of the University of Iowa Community Credit Union BenchMarks program.
Through the end of May, artists selected for the program by the Iowa City Downtown District, are going to be out painting their creations on benches. Those chosen for the work are being paid $300 for each bench they paint, up to three benches.
Applications for the program were taken in March and artists selected were informed earlier this month.
Julie Staub of Iowa City works on her painting, 'Solar Eclipse Salute', on a bench on the Pedestrian Mall in Iowa City on Tuesday, Apr. 25, 2017. Staub is one of the artists selected by the Iowa City Downtown District as part of the University of Iowa Community Credit Union BenchMarks 6 program. (Stephen Mally/The Gazette)
