The City of Fairfax will consider a change to its zoning code that would provide a path for Alliant Energy to site a gas-fired power plant within city limits, near The Eastern Iowa Airport.

In collaboration with Alliant Energy, the smart streetlight project aims to enhance energy efficiency and offer additional amenities in Mount Vernon’s uptown area.

Alliant Energy is moving forward with its proposed project to store renewable energy in batteries near the company’s retired coal plant in Lansing.

The development of data centers in Iowa -- including two that are planned for southwest Cedar Rapids -- will “keep costs down for all customers,” Lisa Barton, president and CEO of Alliant Energy told a Cedar Rapids audience Tuesday.

About 150 Alliant and 70 MidAmerican line workers and crew members were sent to Virginia and Ohio, respectively, to help energy companies there restore customers’ power that was knocked out by the severe storm.

The Iowa Utilities Commission this week approved increases to the gas and electric rates paid by Alliant Energy’s Iowa customers. The increase is less than the company proposed last year.

The Duane Arnold Solar Project is taking shape as about 250 workers a day install panels on more than 800 acres. Alliant Energy, which will own the 200-megawatt site when complete, said the project will be operational by the end of the year.

Heaviside LLC, the development entity behind the proposed $576 million Google data center in Cedar Rapids, recently closed on land slated for the project for $16.573 million and grading is now underway on the site.
