Avian flu reported in 2 more Iowa counties
Confirmations bring to 11 reports in eight counties of bird flu since October

Iowa outbreaks this fall of avian flu have expanded on both sides of the state, with confirmations announced Friday in Taylor and Jones counties.
The confirmations bring to 11 reports in eight counties of the highly contagious bird flu since October. While humans are considered safe, entire flocks of birds are euthanized to keep the disease from spreading. So far, more than 170,000 birds have been killed in Iowa as a result.
A flock of commercial layer chickens in Western Iowa’s Taylor County and a mixed species backyard flock in Eastern Iowa’s Jones County were infected, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship said Friday.
Since October, agriculture officials reported these other outbreaks in Iowa:
- Oct. 20: Commercial turkey flock in Buena Vista County, 49,100 birds destroyed.
- Oct. 23: Commercial turkey flock in Pocahontas County, 50,000 birds.
- Oct. 23: Backyard mixed species in Guthrie County, 50 birds.
- Oct. 31: Commercial turkey flock in Buena Vista County, 30,000 birds.
- Nov. 3: Game bird ducks and backyard mixed species in Clay County, 8,300 birds.
- Nov. 3: Game bird ducks in Clay County, 7,700 birds.
- Nov. 3: Game bird ducks in Clay County, 1,700 birds.
- Nov. 3: Commercial breeding chickens in Hamilton County, 15,000 birds.
- Nov. 7: Game bird pheasants, peafowl and commercial layer chickens in Kossuth County, 8,600 birds.
