Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church parishioners got ball rolling on project to “foster a greater understanding and appreciation” of Black history.

The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at the African American Museum of Iowa, 55 12th Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids. The celebration will include interactive activities for all ages, as well as food, local artisans and opportunities for learning and reflection.

In a mostly white state known first and foremost for its agriculture, “Rooted: Labor, Land and Legacy,” a new exhibit at the museum, reframes the significance of farming’s role for Black farmers and Iowans.

The African American Museum of Iowa will unveil a new exhibit, “Rooted: Labor, Land, & Legacy” on Oct. 17. This exhibit celebrates the role farming plays in Black resiliency and activism.

The event will highlight the achievements of honorees Dr. Michael Blackwell of Cedar Falls, Renee Dunn of Dubuque, Ricki King of Windsor Heights and Nolden Gentry of Des Moines.

The free admission days supported by the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

A new weeklong summer learning program called Freedom School at the African American Museum of Iowa aims to immerse middle school students in history, civic responsibility and leadership this month.

Award-winning independent filmmaker S. Torriano Berry will host a retrospective exhibit featuring his work as an independent filmmaker and a silent auction of art by his mother, Jean Berry, at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 27, at CSPS Hall.

The annual celebration of Juneteenth included informational booths for nonprofits and organizations, live music, a talent show, family activities and vendor booths.

Jacqueline Hunter assumed her role as executive director of the African American Museum of Iowa this month. She brings with her years of experience in education and community engagement.

Called “Black Memorabilia” and “Black Americana” at times, blackface characters and apparel have had a long run in America. Now, the African American Museum is confronting their legacy head-on.

The museum originated with members of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids in the 1990s.

Jacqueline Hunter has been museum educator at the African American Museum of Iowa since August. She will begin her new role as executive director March 3.
