CEDAR RAPIDS – Bettendorf produced the fast start it wanted.
Cedar Rapids Washington didn't respond the way it needed.
The result was a lopsided victory for the Bulldogs.
Bettendorf's Carter Bell dashed 71 yards on Bettendorf's first offensive play for the first of seven first-half touchdowns and the Bulldogs pounded the Warriors, 56-0, Friday night at Kingston Stadium.
'It wasn't an effort thing,” Washington Coach Maurice Blue said. 'We faced some adversity early and didn't do a real great job bouncing back from it.
'That first punch, we didn't really go a good job of responding. The wheels fell off the bus pretty quick.”
Bettendorf (2-1) had its way the first half, despite a punt on its second possession. The Bulldogs scored on seven of its first eight drives, running the ball for 276 of 338 total rushing yards before the break.
'We challenged them and wanted to start fast,” Wiley said. 'A road game against a good team you want to get going right away and we preached that all week. The kids responded.”
Bell played a major role, passing for 115 yards and 114 yards on the ground without taking a snap in the second half.
Bell followed the early long run with a 24-yard TD, breaking a handful of tackles and powering his way into the end zone for a 14-0 lead.
He connected on TD passes each of the next two drives, hitting Jaron Shook for a 4-yard score on 3rd-and-goal and Darien Porter on a 38-yard TD pass to make it 28-0 early in the second quarter.
'He did a great job,” Wiley said. 'He continues to get better and better every week as he gets more comfortable in our offense. He has a chance to be a special kid. Outstanding game by him against a very good defense of Washington.”
The Bulldogs started five first-half drives in Washington territory and added scoring drives of 73 and 63 yards.
The Warriors, on the other hand, had trouble moving the ball, rushing for 27 total yards. Bryan Kunde added 91 passing yards for Washington (2-1).
The Warriors will look to move on quickly, facing a Thursday night game here against Linn-Mar. Blue said both teams will be hungry for wins.
'We have a short week to get ready,” Blue said. 'We have to flush this one.
'Learn from the mistakes we made, which if learning from mistakes makes you better, we're going to get a whole lot better.”
