No. 3 Cedar Rapids Washington edges No. 8 Bettendorf in overtime

BETTENDORF - Keegan Glaus had no qualms with Bettendorf's football team going for a two-point conversion and the win in overtime Friday night.

'I like that decision,” Glaus said.

With an offensive line that was improving throughout the game, the odds were certainly in Bettendorf's favor. The Bulldogs couldn't execute it.

A bad snap resulted in a failed conversion and Class 4A third-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington escaped with a 28-27 victory over eighth-ranked Bettendorf on Friday night at TouVelle Stadium.

'Do you second guess going for two? I thought we had them worn down,” Bettendorf Soach Aaron Wiley said. 'We screwed up the snap, but I felt like we could score on that play. It didn't work.

'They made one more play than we did.”

Both teams turned the ball over three times. Both schools made the other pay for their mistakes.

Ultimately, it came down to a game inside the opponents 10-yard line.

Washington (3-0) went to a play call it hadn't run all season on the first snap of overtime. Lined up in an I-formation, the Warriors dragged tight end Rane Weiland across the field and he caught a Bryan Kunde pass for a 10-yard score. Washington added the point-after to go in front, 28-21.

'It was a play we pulled out of the old bag,” Washington coach Paul James said. 'It came from the 1978 Notre Dame and Michigan game, but we've run it for a long time ever since then. Just not this year.”

The Warriors were held to just one first down and 55 yards of offense in the first half, but managed to regroup in the second half.

'Both teams showed a lot of grit, guts and heart,” James said. 'I give our guys credit considering how good Bettendorf's defense stopped us in the first half.”
