In terms of turning points in a football game, the one in Friday's Class 1A state championship between Van Meter and Iowa City Regina was particularly memorable.
Up 7-0 in the second quarter, Bulldogs QB Blake Fryar heaved a pass toward the goal line that was well underthrown. Regina defensive back Kieler Brown was there for what could have been an interception that kept the Regals within one score and gave their offense the ball back.
But Brown couldn't quite reel it in while backpedaling, and that's where things got nutty. The ball kicked off Brown's foot and right to Van Meter receiver Jack Trudo, who grabbed it after a slight bobble, broke a tackle and found the end zone for what became a 14-0 VM lead.
Here's how Gazette photographer Stephen Mally captured it from the sideline.
