Midnight Hoops ready for return
Any given Sunday or Thursday this summer you can find college basketball talent competing in the Midnight Hoops College Summer League, hosted at Mount Mercy University.
Each team will consist of Coe College, Mount Mercy, Kirkwood, Upper Iowa and other local college student-athletes. The summer league is in its third year of existence, with more than 50 present and past college basketball players participating on the teams.
Games will be held at Mount Mercy's Hennessey Recreation Center on Sundays at 4, 5 and 6 p.m., and Thursday nights at 6, 7 and 8. Each game is refereed by state certified officials and teams are coached by Mount Mercy, Coe and Kirkwood alum.
Spectators are welcome.
An open gym will be held June 1 for coaches to evaluate talent, followed by the draft. The first game is June 8 at 4 p.m.
ICOR wins state title
DES MOINES - The ICOR Boxing Club won the 2014 novice team championship at the Iowa Golden Gloves tournament earlier this month.
ICOR's Paul Holdefer and Richard Glenn won novice titles. Holdefer, 27, of Iowa City won the 141 pound novice championship by defeating Fort Dodge's Spencer Erb via a three-round unanimous decision. Glenn, a 20-year-old University of Iowa student, won at 165 by defeating Daniel Megel of the Iowa State Boxing Club in a three-round unanimous decision.
ICOR's Rhett Lacey, a 29 year-old University of Iowa student, took silver at 201-plus.
In the open division, ICOR's Martin Schuh, a 22-year-old University of Iowa student, won the 165-pound championship and will represent Iowa at the National Golden Gloves tournament in Salt Lake City. May 12-17. He won a bronze in last year's national tournament.
Schuh beat Muscatine County Boxing Club's Francisco Rico in the semifinals and topped Steve Green of the South East Des Moines Boxing Club in the finals, both by unanimous decisions.
ICOR's Golden Gloves champions, along with other ICOR boxers and Muay Thai competitors, will be featured in ICOR's upcoming home show, Local Legends, May 10 at the Johnson County Fairgrounds.
Twisters' Steffensmeier wins regional title
FARGO, N.D. - Allyson Steffensmeier of Twisters Gymnastics won the Level 9 balance beam, placed second in the all around and third on the bars at the regional tournament earlier this month.
Iowa's Level 8 and 9 'super teams” placed second, the Level 10 team third.
Twisters' Alexis Peterson was second in the vault in Level 8.
C.R. boxers win state titles
DES MOINES - Mitchell LeConte, Jacquie Cuddeback and Antonio Woods of the Cedar Rapids Boxing Club won Iowa Golden Glove titles recently.
LeConte won the novice 141-pound with a decision over Beau Porter of New Beginning. Cuddeback won in the women's 119 open unopposed and Woods captured the open 178 title with a decision over Tyrone Powers of Fort Dodge. Cuddeback and Powers advance to the national tournament in May.
