CEDAR RAPIDS — Bryce Schulte has been a quarterback his entire life. It's family tradition.
But the Cedar Rapids Xavier senior will be trying out another position in college.
Schulte announced Tuesday he has accepted a preferred walk-on invitation from the University of Iowa. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder likely will switch to either tight end or linebacker.
'I've been a quarterback since my first flag football team,' Schulte said. 'I was one of the tallest kids on the team, plus I knew my dad wanted me to be a quarterback, with him playing that position and everything. It will be an adjustment. A lot of coaches (during the recruiting process) asked if I'd be willing to play another position. I told them all that I'd do anything to help the team win.'
Schulte was a first-team Class 3A all-state QB by the Iowa Newspaper Association and a two-time district player of the year. According to QuikStats, he was the state's top-rated passer this past season (192.6), throwing for 1,598 yards and 22 touchdowns (to two interceptions).
He holds seven Xavier quarterback records. His brother, Reggie, is a quarterback for the Northern Iowa Panthers, his father, Duane, was a QB at Cedar Rapids LaSalle.
But his build and Iowa's needs means he'll likely play somewhere other than quarterback for the Hawkeyes. He camped at Iowa over the summer and played tight end.
He said he had a scholarship offer from Division II Upper Iowa, but his heart is in Iowa City.
'Iowa was just the right fit,' he said. 'I am definitely grateful for the Upper Iowa offer, but I felt this was home for me.'
