Gary L. Schweitzer - Winthrop

Gary Lee  Schweitzer was born Dec. 10, 1944, at Oelwein, Iowa, the son of John and Eleanor Rita Gaffney Schweitzer. He attended Winthrop schools through junior high when his family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended Regis High School graduating with the class of 1963.

Gary was united in marriage to Mary Kremer on Nov. 28, 1964, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lamont, Iowa. To this union were born two children, Lisa and Mark. They farmed northeast of Winthrop from 1964 until Gary retired in 2007. For 24 years, Gary served as a Buchanan County Supervisor. He liked hunting, fishing, and riding his motorbike.

At the age of 68 years, Gary entered into his eternal rest on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Preceding him in death was his father, John, on Jan. 16, 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of rural Winthrop; his son, Mark of Postville, Iowa; his daughter, Lisa (Andy) Miller of Los Angeles, Calif.; his mother, Rita Schweitzer of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Joyce (Robert) Weger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Geraldine “Gerri” (Paul) Hasley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; other relatives, and many friends.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop and until 10 a.m. until service time on Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Winthrop with Father Donald J. Plamondon officiating. Interment will be in Fremont Township Cemetery north of Winthrop.
