Linn-Mar gets a record; Prairie claims the Cup at Drake Relays

Apr. 30, 2016 6:31 pm
DES MOINES — Surely, something didn't translate.
Maybe Gavren Dochterman's eyes were fooling him. Maybe the scoreboard was teasing him.
'I looked up at the time, and I thought the clock was wrong,' Dochterman said. 'Honestly, I was like, 'No way.''
Way.
Linn-Mar established an all-time Iowa best in the boys' shuttle hurdle relay Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium. Daniel Gorsich, Nick House, Dochterman and Zeal Baker claimed the Drake Relays title in 55.68 seconds.
That bested the Drake record of 56.09 (Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 2010) and wiped out the old state standard of 55.78 (Waukee, 2014).
'I was just hoping to win it,' Gorsich said.
Linn-Mar and Kennedy were in a virtual dead heat at the midpoint of the race, but Dochterman — the third leg — opened an advantage, and the Lions rolled from there. Kennedy was the runner-up, in 56.37, an effort that ranks No. 7 all-time. Austin Coates, Terrell Jordan Jr., Keeler Dix and Shaun Beyer ran for the Cougars.
'Before the race I tried to block out everybody beside me. I only focused on our team,' Dochterman said.
Baker said, 'I just believed in the team, believed in myself. I wanted to bring the team the win.'
Speaking of team wins, Cedar Rapids Prairie raced to the inaugural Hy-Vee High School Cup in the boys' division. The Hawks tallied 26 points in the four events that were scored; Cedar Falls was second with 18.
'That's pretty special. It's something we talked about,' said Jalen Rima, who anchored the Hawks to the 400-meter relay title.
Tysen VanDraska said, 'Winning that is something that gives us confidence going forward.'
Joah Wallace, Trevor Northrup, Marty Borseth and Rima captured the 400 relay in 42.37 seconds.
'We got a new sprint coach in Michael Tierney, and the first thing he said was that when you thought of Prairie, you thought of our distance guys,' Northrup said. 'He wanted to make Prairie a sprint team, too.'
Prairie scored in all four Cup events. The Hawks won the medley relay and the 400 relay, and were fourth in the 1,600 relay and eighth in the 3,200 relay.

'It's unbelievable what we did,' Rima said. 'It's special what we did, both individually and as a team.'
Center Point-Urbana's JoJo Frost came on late and placed second in the 400-meter hurdles. Frost finished in 53.73 seconds, behind Jacob Smith of West Burlington-Notre Dame (53.12).
'I went the fastest I could go, the best I could do,' Frost said. 'A lot of guys caught the stagger on me by the fourth hurdle, I knew I had to pick it up and give it a go.'
Monticello was third in the 3,200-meter relay. Jordan Loes, Derek Manternach, Noah Steiner and Matt Manternach ran in 7:58.88. Cedar Falls won in 7:52.14.
