Spahn, Bridget “Bonnie”
Bridget “Bonnie” Spahn, 78, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Dubuque, finished her walk of life on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, following a long journey with Alzheimer's disease, at Mercy Hallmar in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Nativity, 1225 Alta Vista St., Dubuque. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Siegert – Casper Colonial Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 390 N. Grandview Ave., Dubuque. Online condolences may be made at was born Jan. 5, 1931, in Dougherty, Iowa, daughter of Fred and Leocadia Cahalan. On Aug. 19, 1950, she was united in marriage to Tom Spahn at Holy Family Parish in Mason City. Tom and Bonnie raised their five daughters in Dubuque, where Bonnie was the Executive Director of the American Cancer Society for 25 years. She was a member of the Holy Family Circle at Nativity, ABWA and Wa-Tan-Nee.
Those left to cherish memories are daughters, Kathy (John) Klecker of Pasadena, Calif., Nancy (Tom) Hora of Cedar Rapids, Julie Teachout of Iowa City and Colleen (Rob Whitman) Fitzgerald of Iowa City; twelve grandchildren, Tom, Michael and Ben Klecker; Angie (Jason) Mathiasen, Emily and Phil Hora; Kevin and Tricia Teachout, Shannon (Casey) Lynch, Patrick (Beth) Fitzgerald, Megan and Molly Fitzgerald; two great grandsons, Emmett and Jacob Mathiasen. She is also survived by her wonderful sisters, Mary Hoffmann and Imogene Larson of Mason City, Bernie (Adrian) Ferriera of Peru, Ind., and Sally Cover of Middlebury, Ind.; two sisters-in-law, Donna and Shirley Cahalan and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, a daughter, Patricia, parents, parents in law, five brothers and her oldest, dearest sister, Rose.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Eastern Iowa.The family would like to thank Dr. Mary Anne Nelson, Hospice of Mercy and all the staff at Hallmar for their loving, compassionate care of our mother and grandmother.Bonnie's bright smile and pretty blue eyes will be missed by all.
