Callahan, Louis D. 'Darby'
Louis D. “Darby” Callahan, 87, of 808 Fourth Ave. SW, Cascade, formerly of 20383 Lehner Lane, Bernard, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at 4:02 a.m. at his home in Cascade after a 4-month-long battle with mantle cell lymphoma. Friends and relatives of Darby may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a prayer service will be held at 3 p.m. Services for Darby will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fillmore, Iowa, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Assisting deacon will be Marvin Recker. Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Fillmore, with full military honors afforded by Cascade American Legion Post 528.
He is survived by his wife, LaVonne Callahan of Cascade; eight sons and four daughters, Patrick (JoAnn) Callahan of Anamosa, Michael (Donna) Callahan of Cascade, Thomas (Kim) Callahan of Maquoketa, Mary Wright of Phoenix, Ariz., Ann Callahan of Cascade, Gerald (Tara) Callahan of Winona, Minn., Carol (Bret) Barner of Martelle, Joseph (Gina) Callahan of Dubuque, William (Diane) Callahan of Bernard, Steven (Mary) Callahan of Marion, Linda (Shawn) Carr of Cascade and Robert (Barb) Callahan of Bernard; 33 grandchildren, Dan, Beth, and Sarah, Brian, Erin, Nick and Lauren, Kelli, Andy and Eric, Katie and Lori, Katie, Ryan and Hannah, Alex, Brady and Ryan, Jeff, Megan, and Tony, Jared, Jacob, Darby and Sophie, Matt and Jessica, Kevin, Maggie, Jack and Riley, Nolan and Luke; four stepgrandchildren, Emily, Meghan, Ryan and Spencer; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Bob (Katie) Hunt of Hopkinton, Virgil (Carlyn) Hunt of Edgewood, Norb (Josephine) Hunt of Monticello, Dave (Rita) Hunt of Peosta, Ralph (Gertrude) Hunt of Bernard and Rachel (Donnie) Budden of Petersburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Bob Wright; three brothers, Jim (Jean) Callahan, Joe (Carolyn) Callahan and Bill (Mary Kay) Callahan; two sisters, Grace (Joe) Horsfield and Leona (Jacob) Wagner; his father- and mother-in-law, John and Marcella Hunt; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Clyde “Bud” and Dorothy Hunt, Isabelle and Paul Takes and Russell Hunt in infancy.
In lieu of flowers, plants, or statues, monetary memorials may be given to Sacred Heart Parish in Fillmore, Iowa.
