High-speed chase ends in Marion
N/A
Feb. 22, 2010 2:06 pm
A high-speed chase that nearly went through downtown Marion sent the driver to the hospital.
It all started around 10:00 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Highway 13 and 151 and ended outside the Marion Walgreens on 7th Avenue.
A deputy spotted an SUV with front end damage and no license plates.
When Marion Police arrived on the scene to help, deputies say Aaron Deaton, 25, sped away.
Authorities say Deaton reached speeds of up to 80 miles per hour down 7th Avenue in Marion before ending up at the Walgreen's on 13th Street.
Sheriff's deputies found chemicals in the SUV.
"The amount of chemicals was so significant that they had to bring in a clean up crew from Ankeny to actually take care of the vehicle," said Sheriff Brian Gardner, Linn County Sheriff's Department.
"Especially out here in Marion, you don't see a lot of this kind of action, definitely different for Marion," said William Ford, witness.
The Linn County Sheriff's Office says Deaton faces multiple charges, including "possession of Precursors" or having the ingredients for meth. They also charge him with reckless driving and Attempting to Elude.
