Vincent Raymond Dougherty, 78, of Central City, formerly of Prairieburg, died Monday, March 2, 2015, at the Promise House in Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 5, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairieburg. Scripture Services: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, with visitation to follow from 4 to 8 p.m., at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City. The family also will greet friends one hour before the service at the church. Burial: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Prairieburg.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie of Central City; three sons, Michael (Tammy) Dougherty of Coggon, Paul Dougherty of Cedar Rapids and John (Lois) Dougherty of Center Point; five grandchildren, Tyler (Amanda) Dougherty, Megan (Kevin) Dudley, Sierra Dougherty, Danielle Dougherty and Austin Dougherty; four great-grandchildren, Claire, Kinsey, Collin and Korbin Dougherty; three sisters, Mabel Sires, Anna Souhrada and Marie Herold; two brothers, Ralph Dougherty and Bernard Dougherty; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Florence Lembke; a brother, Francis Dougherty; and four siblings who died in childhood.
Vincent was born May 3, 1936, the son of Johnnie and Anna (Haas) Dougherty in rural Waukon. He graduated from Waukon High School and attended Kirkwood Community College. On Sept. 9, 1961, he married Elsie Marie Harwood at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Vincent served with the U.S. Army during peacetime. He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation District 6 paint crew, retiring in 1997.
He was a very active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairieburg, North Linn Knights of Columbus and the Coggon American Legion. Vincent also served as mayor and councilman of Prairieburg and was on the board of directors for the Prairie-burg Telephone Co.
Vincent enjoyed hunting and fishing, camping, gardening, bird watching and woodworking. He also loved to travel and attend his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's activities.
