Lane, Dr. Charles Kenneth
Dr. Charles Kenneth Lane, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Christopher Podhajsky. Military honors by American Legion Post 727. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, with a vigil service at 5 p.m., with a rosary to follow. Burial will be at a later date.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet; his children, Linda of Philadelphia, Laura (Dave) Franklin of Indianapolis, Ind., William “Pat” (Teresa) Lane of Marion, Charles Henry Lane II, Michael Lane, John Lane, and Lisa (Brian) Lane-Ralston, all of Cedar Rapids, and Liana (Brian) Hines of Greensboro, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Also surviving are his former daughters-in-law, Kathy Akerly of South Amana, Diana Lane and Kathleen Hoopman, both of Cedar Rapids; and his siblings, Theodore Lane of Seattle, Wash., Mary Hession, Patricia (Billy) Denton, and Doris (Carl) Johnson, all of Indianapolis, Ind.
Ken was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Cannelburg, Ind. the sixth of 10 children of Dr. Charles Henry and Ora Belle (Cox) Lane. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 13½ years, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. He traveled the world and was proud to work on “Project Hi-Flight.” It is special to note all of his brothers also served in the military.
On Aug. 14, 1954, he married Janet Mason at Immaculate Conception in Cedar Rapids. Ken graduated in 1961 from Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis. He and his wife operated, Dr. C.K Lane Chiropractic. Ken had special pride in knowing the hundreds of patients he helped and cared for in his 40 years of practice. He was a member of the International Chiropractic Association.
An active member of Immaculate Conception, Ken served as an usher, sang in the choir, was an early member of the Pilgrim Virgin group, and was a member of the I.C. Home School Association and the Catholic Family Movement. He served as a leader with Boy Scouts of America Troop #1 and was in the Knights of Columbus.
Ken enjoyed spending time his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He liked working in the yard, fixing and repairing cars, restoring antique furniture, fishing and hunting, playing cards and was a fan of the Hawkeyes, Cubs and Bulls. Ken liked music, especially blue grass and playing his mandolin. His sense of family and taking care of people will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Matthew Kenneth Akerly; brothers, William, Warren, Wallace and Bernie Lane; sister, Rella Sims; his wife's parents, Dr. and Mrs. W.A. Mason; and a special son, Kevin Panek.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial masses or memorials in his name to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or Hospice of Mercy.
A very special thank you to Hospice of Mercy, especially Nurse Jenny and Chaplain Joe for their compassionate care during Ken's illness.
