Sherle I. Spring was born Jan. 28, 1928, in Plainview, Minn., the daughter of Elmer and Delores (Cowles) Spring. Sherle graduated from Gage Park High School, where she met her future husband, John E. Kasik. John enlisted in the U.S. Navy and before he was sent to the Pacific, the couple was married. After his military service, he returned to Chicago, where he pursued his medical degree and Sherle supported him, working as a secretary for PIE (Pacific Inter-Mountain Express) in Chicago while also caring for their growing family. Dr. John Kasik accepted a position at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City in 1970, and their family moved here. Sherle not only cared for the home front, but was very involved in their six children's lives in school, sports, Scouting, along with supporting John's work and professional career. Over the years, she developed the love of gardening, cooking, sewing, knitting and crosswords, often coming together with others who enjoyed the same forging friendships that lasted for years. In addition to all of this, she found time to volunteer for over 30 years at the UI Hospital and enjoyed a lifetime of reading, becoming an active member of the Friends of the Solon Library. But near and dear to Sherle's heart was her family. She loved being Mrs. John Kasik, "Mom" to her children and "Grandma" to her grandchildren! She just recently returned from a trip to Mexico with most of her family, just days before her death.
Her family includes her children, James Kasik (Carron Whitson), Alan Kasik, Susan Miller (Paul) and Peter Kasik (Lynn Worrell); two daughters-in-law. Sheila Kasik and Renee Kasik; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; two sons, Robert and John Kasik; and her sister, Marlene Miller.
