Sullivan, Alyce M.
Alyce M. Sullivan, 83, of Coralville, died peacefully surrounded by her family, on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. John Spiegel officiating. (Sunday parking ordinance will be in effect for the streets near the church.) Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
Alyce Marguerite Eister was born May 26, 1927, in rural Johnson County, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Gertrude (Novak) Eister. She graduated from Tiffin High School in 1945. Alyce was united in marriage to John R. Sullivan on April 5, 1948, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. The couple moved to Coralville in 1950 where they have resided since. For over 30 years Alyce was employed by ACT, retiring in 1996. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
In her youth, Alyce was a member of the Tiffin High School girls basketball team and was also a cheerleader for the school. This love of sports, especially women's continued in her life as she was such an avid supporter of all of the Iowa Hawkeyes Women's sports.
Alyce loved her family, especially as the grandchildren came along; she enjoyed her flowers and gardens at their home for many years. In years past, you would see Alyce and John on many of the dance floors or roller skating rinks around Eastern Iowa.
Her family includes her husband, John; two sons and their wives, Mike and Robin Sullivan and Pat and Megan Sullivan, all of Coralville; and three grandchildren, Tyler, Sean and Riley Sullivan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Connie Lee Sullivan; and two infant sons at birth; a brother, Harry Eister; and two sisters, Elizabeth Wyjack and Irene Oakes.
A memorial fund has been established in her memory.
