Meehan, Edward Thomas
Edward Thomas Meehan, 86, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Falls after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, at Grace United Methodist Church in Lamont. Military graveside services will follow at Campton Cemetery, east of Lamont. Friends may call from 3 until 5 p.m. Sunday and after 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
He was born Feb. 25, 1926, in Albert Lea, Minn., the son of Edward Thomas Meehan Sr. and Alice Tapagar Meehan. Ed graduated from Riceville High School in Riceville, Iowa. From 1946 to 1949, Ed served in Europe in the U.S. Army Engineers, and also in Korea from 1950 to 1951. While serving in Germany, Ed played on the U.S. Army European Championship football team.
Ed was united in marriage to Betty (Learn) on May 23, 1950. They had four children: Trudy, Kelly, Denise and Brian “Pete.”
Ed and Betty lived in Lamont for most of their married life. They lived three years in Cedar Rapids while Ed worked for Wickes Lumber Co. before returning to Lamont in 1969 after purchasing Learn Lumber yard from Betty's father, Dale Learn. Ed owned and operated the lumberyard until his retirement in 1986.
Ed loved fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Ed and Betty spent weekends and summers in Harpers Ferry at Lund's camp, and traveled south during the winter months.
Ed is survived by his children, Trudy, Denise (Jerry Tribbey) and Brian “Pete” (Terri); grandchildren, Kyle Collins, Paul and Luke Tribbey, Jake, Jesse, Brett and Samantha Meehan, Bobbette Davis and Chase and Mark Meehan; daughter-in-law, Vicki West Meehan; and great-grandchildren.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; son, Kelly; grandson, David Tribbey; and several brothers and sisters.
Fawcett Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Lamont is assisting the family with arrangements.
