Ronald Sundermann, 73, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 15, at First Lutheran Church. A visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Ron was born Aug. 16, 1942, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Wilbert and Irma (Schroeter) Sundermann. Graduating from Carroll High School, Class of 1960, he went on to receive his bachelor's degree at the University of Iowa, where he made lifelong friends as a member of Acacia Fraternity. He then received his master's degree from the University of of Northern Iowa. Ron taught history in Hubbard, Iowa, for seven years before moving to Marshalltown, where he became an insurance agent.
Ron retired from Skogman Carlson Insurance in Cedar Rapids in 2010. He married the love of his life, Trudy, in 1965. To this union two children were born.
He was a past president of Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club, and recently was given an award for raising money to fight tetanus in mothers and babies.
Ron was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a great storyteller and a student of history and government. He enjoyed singing in the First Lutheran Church choir and listening to music. He also enjoyed traveling, golfing and most importantly, spending time with his family and grandchildren and his dog, Willow.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Left to cherish Ron's memory are his wife of 50 years, Trudy Sundermann; children, Amy (Steve Polyak) Sundermann and Ryan (Heather) Sundermann; brothers, Gary (Marilyn) Sundermann and Steve (Patti) Sundermann; and grandchildren, Jack, Eliza, Lucy and Joey.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cedar Rapids Downtown Kiwanis Club.
