In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund had been established.
Evelyna was born April 4, 1923, on a dairy farm north of Iowa City, the daughter of V.F. and Margarette Gilpatrick Cole. Evelyna was the youngest of five sisters and two brothers. She was a 1940 graduate of Iowa City High School and received her teaching certificate and bachelor's degree in early childhood education from the University of Iowa. On June 29, 1948, Evelyna married William Kron in Iowa City and of their union were born four children, William, Steve, Doug and Tresa.
Evelyna began her teaching career in 1941. She taught in Johnson County rural schools for eight years. The last of those years were in a rural school west of Iowa City, where Iowa City West High School now stands. For eight years, Evelyna taught third and fourth grade at St. Josephs School in Hills. She then was employed with Head Start until she was 71, and then tutored children in reading and math in her home. While at Head Start, Evelyna returned to the University of Iowa to complete her degree. Evelyna received many teaching honors including being a Kate Wickham honoree.
Evelyna's love for children is well documented. She loved to visit in home and teaching children preschool skills. She maintained friendships with families who still kept in touch with her.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Church and the National Catholic Order of Foresters.
Evelyna is survived by three sons, William (Deb) Kron of West Branch, Steve (Amy) Kron of Iowa City, and Doug (Roseanne) Kron of Solon; 12 grandchildren, Kim, Angel, Kezia, Jathon, Delana, Rick, Elizabeth, Sara, Alex, Nick, Adam and Will; and many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Evelyna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Tresa; and her siblings, Leslie and Vernon Cole, Bertha Harms, Margaret Dvorsky, Matilda Baker, Marcella Freund and Marie Ruppert.
