Leinen, Donald C.
Donald C. Leinen, 87, of Kalona, formerly of Iowa City and Harper, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at Mercy, Iowa City, following a lingering illness. Celebration of life: 11 a.m. Thursday, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Richmond, with Father Rich Adam officiating. Burial will take place later at St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Harper. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Peterseim Funeral Home, Kalona, with a rosary at 7 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Leinen of Kalona; four children, Theresa (Rollin III) Howard of Sachse, Texas, Leo (Theresa) Leinen of Kalona, Matthew Leinen of Cedar Rapids, and Maria (Frank) Gonzales of Wylie, Texas; grandchildren, Rollin IV, Joshua, Zachary, Jake, Ben, Tom, Emmalee, Brittney and Audrey; siblings, Mary Kay Gerleman of Cedar Rapids, Eva Parrish of Cedar Rapids, Bernadette (Wilbert) Adam of Keota, Roseanne (O.B.) Giltner of Fairtown, Ohio, J. Arthur (Norma) Leinen of Keota, and Leon (Rose) Leinen of West Des Moines; and one sister-in-law, Jerri (Don) Moeller of Davenport.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerome Leinen.
Donald was born May 8, 1922, to John W. and Anna Britten Leinen in South English, Iowa. He married Darlene Steckel on Nov. 29, 1958, in Cedar Rapids.
Donald was a farmer for 48 years, until 1988. He moved to Iowa City in 1989. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and formerly St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Harper, where he served as an alter boy, sang in choir, ushered was a trustee and served on the parish council and was a religion education teacher.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Recorder, Deputy Grand Knight and Grand Knight. He served on the Keota/Harper School Board, volunteered for 2000 plus hours at Mercy, Iowa City, volunteered at the free lunch program at Wesley House, and helped rebuild Colonial Lanes Bowling Alley after a tornado. He enjoyed bowling as much as possible, including Wednesday league. His other interests were gardening, growing and sharing vegetables and playing cards.
