Elmer, the son of Joseph and Ida (Rothermich) Barthelmes, was born on June 15, 1919, in Norway, Iowa. He attended school in Blairstown, Iowa. Elmer married Hazel Steinberg at Immaculate Conception Church in Van Horne, Iowa, on Aug. 19, 1940. They had a reception and dance in Blairstown in the evening. Elmer and Hazel lived in Cedar Rapids, where he was a machinist until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1944 to 1946. Elmer was on the USS Hobby destroyer in the Pacific Ocean during the war. Elmer enjoyed hunting and fishing and spent many enjoyable days fishing in Minnesota and Missouri. Elmer and Hazel loved traveling, especially to Branson, Mo., and for their 50th wedding anniversary drove to Alaska. He also attended many stock car races to see his son, daughter and son-in-law race. Elmer, throughout his life, had a strong work ethic which also included mowing his two-acre lawn until the age of 98. He was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church in Coggon and Troy Mills American Legion Floyd Williamson Post 712.
Elmer's parents preceded him in death; as well as his baby sister, Marcella.
