Joan Gordon was born Dec. 26, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Thomas and Marjorie (Herington) Courtney. Joan grew up with an extended family including her mother, Marjorie; her sister, Betty; brother, Jack; and her grandparents, aunt, uncles and cousins. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1949. She enjoyed roller skating and that was where she met her husband, Robert Gordon. They were married in 1950, and later divorced. Joan had three children, Mike, Brad and Melissa.
Joan worked over the years at Killian's Department Store, managed two uniform stores, but she most enjoyed working at the Salvation Army where she managed thrift stores and coordinated donations. She retired there in 2006 after 23 years.
Joan enjoyed spending time with her family, especially family picnics and fishing trips. She also enjoyed an occasional road trip that might include a stop at a casino. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Mike (Kim) Gordon, Brad (Karen) Gordon and Melissa (Russ) Kaegbein, all of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Michelle (Jeff) Huber, Ryan Kaegbein and Luke Kaegbein; and great-granddaughter, Madelyn Huber.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at the Meth-Wick Community and UnityPoint Hospice.
