Gordon A. Powers, 68, of Independence, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, at Buchanan
County Health Center in Independence.
He was born Sept. 15, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Fred Merlin and Kathryn Virginia (Bowermaster) Powers. After graduating in 1964 from Marion High School, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea during the Vietnam conflict. Gordon was employed in automobile sales for most of his career. He was a friend of Bill W.
Gordon is survived by his children, Michael, Joe, Jamie and Jason; five grandchildren; a brother, Jerry (Jan) Powers of Cedar Rapids; a niece, Christine; a foster sister, Shirley (Allan) Smith of Cedar Rapids; a foster brother, Robert Schierholz of Cedar Rapids; and close friends, Willard Wright and Laree Randall of Independence.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at the Cremation Garden in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence. White Funeral Home, Independence, is in charge of arrangements.
