Hazel was born Feb. 20, 1913, in Nashua, Iowa, to the late Ora and Sophia (Lange) Scott. The family later moved to Madrid, Iowa, and Hazel graduated from Madrid High School in 1930. She married Donald M. Auestad on June 2, 1940, in Vinton. He preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1977. She also was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Mary Scott.
Hazel was a 74-year member of the Methodist Church and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton since 1965. She was a lifetime member of the Vinton Women's Club and a member of the Vinton American Legion Auxiliary for 60 years.
Hazel taught country school for several years until her marriage. She was a homemaker when her children were small, and in later years, she worked as a secretary/bookkeeper while living in Newton and for the Vinton Clinic in Vinton, from which she retired. She moved to Bettendorf in 1991 and lived there until she moved to Amber Ridge in Moline in 2013.
Hazel was a good cook and family and friends have many of her recipes. Her freezer always had cookies waiting for grandchildren and visitors. She liked to sew and do needlework and was a member of the Vinton Methodist Church's "Mission Stitchers" for many years. She made over 50 gowns, dresses and baby quilts each year that were sent to church missions overseas. After moving to Bettendorf, she enjoyed attending school activities and sporting events to support her grandchildren.
