Poppe, Edwris
Edwris Poppe, 90, died Sept. 10, 2012, at the Anamosa Care Center following an extended illness. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at the United Methodist Church in Anamosa. Pastor Laurie Riley will officiate at the service. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Anamosa.
Surviving are three children, Judy (John) Swift, Gary Poppe and Luann (Warren) Byerly; seven grandchildren: four stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; three sisters, Geraldine Bright, Ilene Norton, and an infant sister, Lucille; and two brothers, Farris Biggart and Harold Biggart.
Edwris was born May 6, 1922, in Martelle, Iowa, to Cloyd and Bertha “Dolly” (Robertson) Biggart. She attended Anamosa Schools. She was a lifelong member of the Anamosa United Methodist Church. On June 30, 1939, she was united in marriage to Carl Poppe. She and Carl farmed together for the next 40 years. They retired to Anamosa in 1979. They were married 68 years before Carl's death in 2007.
Edwris worked for Tyler and Downings Grocery and as a secretary at Anamosa High School. For many years, Edwris was an accomplished dressmaker, particularly with her specialized alteration skills.
