CEDAR RAPIDS - For the fourth consecutive year Seth Wennermark will travel to the state dual wrestling tournament with Cedar Rapids Prairie.
The senior is finding things a little different this year after a 61-9 win over Dubuque Hempstead at the Class 3A Regional final.
His brother, Trenten, will accompany him as a teammate in Des Moines. The 113-pound freshman is looking forward to his first trip to state as a competitor.
'I'm glad this is my first year and I get to go to state duals,” Trenten Wennermark said. 'I'm looking forward to hanging out with the team and winning.”
Prairie Coach Blake Williams said he would take an entire team of competitors like the Wennermarks.
'Those two do a nice job of complimenting each other,” Williams said. 'I wish I had more brothers on the team.”
Seth, a senior at 132 pounds, started wrestling in 8th grade, while Trenten started in kindergarten. Despite Trenten's years of experience, Seth still plays the older brother card on occasion.
'Even though I started later than him, he knows that I do know what I'm talking about sometimes,” Seth said.
Trenten uses his experience to help his brother get better.
'We push each other in and out of the room,” said Trenten. 'I teach him how to stay calm sometimes. And maybe a few tricks.”
Staying clam proved vital to Seth's victory at 132 pounds. Hempstead's Rees Hauder was disqualified for shoving Seth after the whistle on three separate occasions.
'I just kept my calm and he didn't,” said Seth. 'And it worked out in my favor.”
Trenten won at 113 pounds, defeating Dillon Gottschalk, 3-1. Prairie lost the opening match at 285, but won the next eight to lock up another trip to state. The Prairie Hawks recorded six wins by pin.
'We fed off those early wins and kept it going from there,” said Williams.
